Chapter 22 - Touch and Go

The minute I got into Nashville, I called Connie Guthrie and her daughter Bessie, the people Nate used to live next door to when he taught at Vanderbilt. Connie at 42 was a divorced secretary who had a boyfriend. Bessie, a below average looking girl of 19, was a second year student at Vanderbilt.

I slept outside in Old Bones. The street in front of the Guthrie house had a slight incline to it. As a consequence, I don’t think I slept at all since I had to fight gravity all night. I must have slept, because I had a dream.

It was the day Maggie was going to marry Todd Olson. Her family rented a mansion out in the countryside. My car broke down on the way there, so I stood on the side of the road with my thumb out. Maggie’s father drove by, noticed me, stopped and started to back up to give me a ride. He backed up too far and crashed into a house. Maggie came running out of the house, naked, and started screaming at her father. I saw there was no damage to the house, so I grabbed her by the ankles and turned her upside down, while at the same time shouting at her father, “She can’t see your license plate! Go on, get out of here!” He followed my orders and zoomed off. Maggie was in a rage and she started swinging at me, but her blows felt like feathers. She shouted, “If you were a man you’d go to bed with me right now.”

End of the dream, except I woke up to find my sheets wet and sticky.
